Program Objective

This program will prepare the student to become a Medical Assistant. Graduates will be eligible to take the state board examinations for National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), National Certified Medical Office Assistant (NCMOA), and/or Phlebotomy Technician NCPT).

Program Description 

The Medical Assistant Program (certificate) is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions as medical assistants in a variety of healthcare settings. Students study the structure and function of the major body systems in conjunction with medical terminology, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, computer skills, administrative processes, bookkeeping and accounting practices, and the processing of medical insurance forms and claims. There are three components to the curriculum: Core, Administrative, and Clinical. The program includes classroom learning activities and practice situations in simulation labs with additional hours of externship experience, which provides the student with the necessary skills for practice. Students acquire entry-level competencies, which satisfy industry needs while learning how to become effective multi-skilled members of the health team.

The curriculum is appropriate preparation for the following certification examinations:

  • Certified EKG Technician (CET-NHA)
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-NHA).
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA-NHA).
  • Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA-NHA)

Medical Assistant Program Outcome Competencies:

  • Apply state and federal regulations while performing clinical and administrative duties.
  • Apply medical assisting theory and skills in the ambulatory healthcare setting.
  • Use technology while performing clinical and administrative duties.
  • Employ protective practices required within the ambulatory healthcare setting.
  • Compose professionally written documents using electronic technology.
  • Evaluate patient needs and perform services in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Interact professionally with providers, staff, and patients.

The programs are open to all persons who meet the following requirements.

  1. Applicants must present evidence of a high school diploma or GED.
  2. Applicants who do not have a high school diploma, high school certification, or GED and are 18 years of age or older must demonstrate the ability to learn from the program of instruction. Applicants must pass the TABE Basic Skills Exit Requirements: Reading 10, Math 10, Language 10.
  3. Provide evidence of good physical and mental health (through evidence of a physical performed by a licensed healthcare provider).
  4. Provide evidence of meeting immunization requirements by providing a negative urine drug screening, evidence that the applicant is free of active tuberculosis, and has immunizations for measles, mumps, rubella and varicella.
  5. Provide evidence of Florida Department of Law Enforcement Level 2 Background Check and Drug Screen.

Graduation Requirements

You will receive a Medical Assisting Certificate upon satisfactory completion of the program in which you enrolled when you:

  • Complete each required course, meeting each course’s minimum standards in addition to obtaining an overall CGPA of 70% or higher and satisfying all financial obligations.
  • At this time, special recognition awards will be issued to students in recognition of outstanding performance.
